Juicy, elegant nuances of white stone fruit, a little passion fruit, opulent, complex, salty, tapering off with immense extract, yet almost ethereal. Excellent length, enormous ageing potential, a wine of tremendous delicacy and finesse.

• Wine Advocate: The 2021 Drnsteiner Grner Veltliner Ried Kellerberg offers a deep, clear, complex yet refined and refreshing, remarkably coolish and herbal “forest” bouquet with notes of wet stones and crushed green leaves. The fruit aromas are dark forest berries (cassis) rather than yellow stone fruits at this early stage. On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet incredibly pure and fresh, crystalline, saline and highly elegant Kellerberg with substance, well-dosed power and lingering salinity and phenolic tension. Far from being big and voluminous, this is a rather lean, elegant and finessed but tightly woven and very long Kellerberg that will unfold even more layers with longer bottle age. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022.

• James Suckling: Stunning and totally original nose of mango, lychee, Amalfi lemon and a complex mix of pepper aromas. Enormous concentration, yet its so vibrant, the staggering mineral freshness slicing through the richness on the mid-palate like a samurai sword halving a melon. But that makes it sound more dramatic than it really is, because actually this is so still and earthed. Astonishingly textural complexity at the finish for a wine from this grape with just 13% alcohol. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Producer Information

Weingut F.X. Pichler is a wine producer based in the Unesco World Heritage Site of Wachau, Austria. It specialzes in producing a range of complex, intensely flavored wines wines from Grner Veltliner, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. The estate vineyards are located on steep stone terraces, predominantly located on the southern side of the Danube river. There is a total of 20 hectares (49 acres) of vineyards planted to Grner Veltliner, Riesling and small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Gelber Muskateller. These vineyards are steeped in history the Loibner Burgstall vineyard appears in documents dating back as early as 1248. F.X. Pichler was established in 1898 in Drnstein and in 1976, the estate passed to Franz Xaver (F.X.) Pichler. The winery created its eye-catching Unendlich Riesling in 1998, and features a star-studded blue label inspired by Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s stage setting for Mozart’s The Magic Flute opera. The label was specially designed in order to reflect the meaning of the word “unendlich”, which translates as never-ending. The modern cellars were built in 2009, and were designed to reflect the historic 12th and 13th Century steep stone terraces typical of Wachau.
