A smoky, spiced character underpins the fruit. The palate is taut, tightly meshed, and emphatically mineral. There’s a classically fresh acidic arc and saline finish with lime freshness.

• Wine Advocate: Bottled in April and partly from the first pickings in the terraces of the top vineyards and partly from the latest picking on the valley floor, FX Pichler’s 2021 Drnsteiner Grner Veltliner offers a beautifully clear, intense and elegant nose with a stony and even flinty character and the typical coolish Wachau spiciness. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, dense and elegant, vital and lively Veltliner with structured fruit, grip and stable, saline acidity that carries the wine to a sustainable and tensioned finish. Stimulating bitter notes here. 13% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022.

• James Suckling: Heres a wonderful wine for those who generally find gruner veltliner too broad and soft. Still very youthful on the nose, with Amalfi-lemon and mirabelle aromas. Although it has some of the white-pepper character of the grape, this is very delicate. Impressive concentration and a lightness of touch is also an unusual combination for the grape. Long, focused finish. Mostly from younger vineyards in the top sites of Drnstein. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Producer Information

Weingut F.X. Pichler is a wine producer based in the Unesco World Heritage Site of Wachau, Austria. It specialzes in producing a range of complex, intensely flavored wines wines from Grner Veltliner, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. The estate vineyards are located on steep stone terraces, predominantly located on the southern side of the Danube river. There is a total of 20 hectares (49 acres) of vineyards planted to Grner Veltliner, Riesling and small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Gelber Muskateller. These vineyards are steeped in history the Loibner Burgstall vineyard appears in documents dating back as early as 1248. F.X. Pichler was established in 1898 in Drnstein and in 1976, the estate passed to Franz Xaver (F.X.) Pichler. The winery created its eye-catching Unendlich Riesling in 1998, and features a star-studded blue label inspired by Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s stage setting for Mozart’s The Magic Flute opera. The label was specially designed in order to reflect the meaning of the word “unendlich”, which translates as never-ending. The modern cellars were built in 2009, and were designed to reflect the historic 12th and 13th Century steep stone terraces typical of Wachau.
