It has an exceptionally pure bouquet of intense black berry and blueberry fruit, crushed stone and touches of Japanese nori. The medium-bodied palate is structured, tensile and very saline, with taut tannins and that limestone-driven pixelation clearly apparent on the finish.

• Wine Advocate: Unfurling in the glass with aromas of raspberries and cherries mingled with hints of rose petals and spices, the 2020 Les Perrires de Lafleur is medium to full-bodied, deep and velvety, with a concentrated core of fruit that’s framed by beautifully refined tannins and animated by lively acids, concluding with a long, intensely mineral finish. As readers will remember, this exciting new project derives from holdings on the limestone plateau of Fronsac planted with massal selections from Lafleur. Best after 2027.

• Decanter: This is a wine for those who really love going deep-diving into limestone. It performs the acrobatic, trapeze artist feat of tiptoeing high above the palate with gunsmoke, cool blueberry and redcurrant fruits and flowers curling upwards. Austere and fierce, stretching forward, then softening as it opens, although it takes its time to do so. There is really a feeling that they are doing something different here, thinking deeply about what it means to link wine’s sense of a place to its expression in a glass. Brilliant.

Chteau Lafleur is a tiny (4.5ha, 11 acres) family-run property in the Pomerol appellation on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Its grand vin of the same name, a combination of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, is known for its concentration, creamy texture, intense black fruits and spicy character. The wine is also powerfully structured and needs more cellaring than most wines in the appellation. In the best vintages it can last half a century. Famous US wine critic Robert Parker has called it “one of the most distinctive, most exotic, and greatest wines not only in Pomerol, but in the world”. Thanks in part to regular praise from Parker, who first visited in 1975, it is one of the most sought-after and highest priced wines on our database. Lafleur was founded in 1872 when Henri Greloud, the owner of Chteau Le Gay, bought the plot. It remains in the family and is now run his great, great grandchildren Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau. There are now six distinct vineyards (or groups of parcels) within the portfolio, each corresponding to a distinct wine.
