Tenuta di Capezzana is a historic Italian wine producer with a long history in Tuscany. It is based in the small Carmignano appellation and has played a pivotal role advocating for the region’s reputation as a source of fine wines. Capezzana wines were produced under the Chianti designation until Carmignano was awarded its own DOC status in 1975 and DOCG status in 1990. The classification came about following a campaign of local producers, of which Capezzana was one of the most significant. The estate now accounts for more than half of all the DOCG Carmignano wine produced each year. Sangiovese is the most significant red variety of the portfolio, often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The most important white varieties are Trebbiano and Malvasia. The estate has been planted with vines for centuries, and the region itself is known for its wine production during Roman rule. The Capezzana property has records of vineyards and olive groves dating as far back as 804AD, and buildings and cellars built early in the Italian Renaissance. It was bought by the Bonacossi family in the first part of the 20th Century and remains owned and operated by the current Bonacossi generation. The family expanded the vineyard holdings and in the 1920s began releasing their own commercial wine. Capezzana is divided into three estates and practices organic farming in its vineyards and olive groves. It also makes wine from the Barco Reale and Rosato di Carmignano sub-regions.
