• Wine Advocate: Made with mostly Sangiovese supplemented by the structural heft and texture of Cabernet Sauvignon (that makes up roughly 20% of the blend), this is a profound and important red wine from Tuscany. The Mazzei 2019 Concerto di Fonterutoli is your proverbial steak buddy, or all-round meat wine, with abundant black fruit, spice, tannins and acidity to cut through the fat and the gristle. By a hair, I prefer the depth and intensity of the 2019 vintage compared to the 2018 vintage that I tasted at this same sitting. This wine is slightly more etched and angular, making it a good bet for extra bottle aging.

• Vinous: The 2019 Concerto di Fonterutoli, the estate’ 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon blend, is quite the powerhouse. Cabernet very much drives the blend in 2019, in its aromas, flavors and overall structure. Dark cherry, herbs, licorice, menthol and spice abound. Whereas the 2020 is already quite open, the 2019 needs a year or two in bottle, if not more, to be at its best.

Castello di Fonterutoli is a Mazzei family property since 1435 this centuries-old knowledge of its terroir combined with 50 years of research on Sangiovese allows us to make the most of our terroir and to create wines of great diversity and complexity. The Estate covers a total area of 650 hectares, of which “only” 117 of vineyards, divided in 7 main areas and located between 230 and 500 meters above see level, and once more divided in 120 different parcels The remaining land has been destined for other more marginal crops and especially for the woods with the aim of guaranteeing the stability of the ecosystem and its biodiversity. The cellar of Castello di Fonterutoli allows to enhance every single parcel with a separate vinification and a maturation in single barrels, translating this great diversity into an extraordinary breadth of aromas and complexity The grapes from these 120 parcels are harvested by hand, turned into wine and aged in wood barrels separately, transforming the value of diversity into an extraordinary breadth of bouquet and complexity.
