Movia is a wine producer and wine estate based in the municipality of Brda, in western Slovenia, on the very border with Italy. Indeed, the estate has vineyards on both the Slovenian and Italian (Collio Goriziano) sides of the frontier. Movia makes a wide range of wines from local varieties like Rebula (Italy’s Ribolla) and more international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Gris. There are about 22 hectares (54 acres) under vine at Movia and the estate vineyards have been run organically since 2004. Low-lying hills and a Mediterranean climate give the area a good terroir for grapegrowing, producing grapes with good acidity and aromatic complexity. This is particularly important for the Rebula grape variety, which makes up a large proportion of Movia’s production. Rebula is used both in varietal wines and in blends. Movia makes a range of labels, including the entry-level Vila Marija wines and several sparkling wines, as well as a range of top-level wines from selected vineyards. Many of the wines see the use of French oak, and Movia has a reputation for the high quality of its wines.
