Chteau Phlan Sgur is a wine estate in the Saint-Estphe region of the Mdoc, northern Bordeaux. The grand vin is typically composed of 50 to 65 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with the remainder made up from Merlot. It is regarded as one of the better estates omitted from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It belongs to the Union des Grand Crus de Bordeaux, and is classified in the Place de Bordeaux in the category of “Grand Crus Classs et assimils (and equivalents)”. It was rated as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 2003, but has not been part of that ranking since 2007. Phlan Sgur’s history dates back to the late 18th Century, when Tipperary wine merchant Bernard O’Phelan arrived in Bordeaux. After marrying into the renowned Guestier family, he purchased the Saint-Estphe properties Clos de Garramey and Sgur de Cabanac in 1805 and 1810, creating Chteau Sgur de Garramey, and built the Palladian chateau which remains there today. The property took on its current name at the start of the 20th Century when it was changed from Chteau Sgur de Garramey to Chteau Phlan Sgur . Following a century of ownership by the Delon family of Loville Las-Cases fame, Phlan-Sgur was acquired by Xavier Gardiner in 1984. Gardiner (whose group has been associated with the Lanson and Pommery Champagne houses, among other enterprises) died in 2013.
