Reviews:
Chteau La Croix de Gay is a wine estate in the north of the highly coveted Pomerol appellation of northeast Bordeaux, on the right bank of the Dordogne river. The property is owned by the Lebreton family, whose winemaking history dates back to 1772. Today the estate is overseen by Chantal Lebreton. Although at the northern end of the Pomerol appellation, on the edge of the Barbanne stream, the chteau is well-placed, with Chteau Clinet and L’Eglise Clinet to the west, Chteau Le Gay to the east, with Ptrus and Chteau Lafleur to the southeast, a little further on. The Croix de Gay vineyard covers just four hectares (10 acres) of land, and is divided into 10 parcels, planted chiefly to Merlot with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. The plots cover Pomerol’s high gravel plateau and graduate from large gravel particles at the top of the terrace, down to finer gravel on the south-facing slopes. In the vineyards, grapes are harvested by hand only when they reach optimal ripeness. The grapes are processed using a gravity flow system and the wine is vinified in small cement vats. The Chteau le Croix de Gay grand vin is aged for up to two years in 50 percent new French oak barrels. The Lebreton family also owns the Chteau La Fleur de Gay label. This wine is produced from a specific three-hectare block of Merlot within the La Croix de Gay estate.
