Pahlmeyer is a Californian wine estate, founded in Napa Valley in 1986 by attorney Jayson Pahlmeyer and owned by E. & J. Gallo Winery. It is particularly known for its eponymous proprietary red wine, prized for its dense, dark rich fruit and full body. The estate is famous for its involvement with some of the greatest winemaking names in California. Randy Dunn of Dunn Vineyards made the first vintage of the proprietary red in 1986, Bob Levy of Harlan Estate launched Pahlmeyer Chardonnay in 1991 and prominent Napa winemaker Helen Turley was in charge of winemaking through most of the 1990s. Pahlmeyer’s aim at the outset was to create a “California Mouton” California’s version of the famed Chteau Mouton-Rothschild wines of Pauillac, in Bordeaux. The project got off to a good start, with the proprietary red getting a 94-point rating from famed US wine critic Robert Parker on its first release. The label proceeded to establish itself as one of Napa Valley’s standard-bearers, commanding high prices and a cult following. The brand has not established a home winery and has a history of making wines in other facilities. Both Pahlmeyer’s proprietary red and the super-premium Pice de Resistance cuve are typically based on Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Both are fermented and aged in mostly new French barrels, with the remainder in larger 500-liter puncheons. The fruit is sourced from the estate-owned Waters Ranch vineyard, planted in 1998 high on Atlas Peak overlooking the Napa Valley. This 29-hectare (72-acre) property also provides the fruit for Pahlmeyer’s Napa Valley and Vieilles Vignes Napa Valley Chardonnay. In addition to the Pahlmeyer wines, a range is produced under the second label, Jayson, from the Napa Valley, Sonoma Coast and North Coast appellations. Pahlmeyer also owns the Wayfarer Vineyard in Fort Ross-Seaview, within the Sonoma Coast. The Pahlmeyer brand was purchased by California wine giant E. & J. Gallo Winery in 2019. Pahlmeyer, however, retained the Waters Ranch vineyard, with fruit supplied to Gallo on a four-year lease.
