• Wine Advocate: Deep brick in color, the 2000 Rauzan-Sgla gives a mature nose of sandalwood, sweaty leather, cinnamon stick and star anise with wafts of raisin cake, dried cherries and preserved plums. Medium-bodied with a chewy texture and a good amount of remaining dried berries and savory layers, it finishes just a little rustic.

• James Suckling: This is just starting to open up on the nose with tobacco, plums and currants throughout. Full-bodied, with lots of tobacco and chocolate that turns to notes of coffee and fruit on the finish. The palate is just starting to come around. Why should you wait on this? The winemaker says that it will be better after 2012. Rich and slightly austere still at the finish.

Chteau Rauzan-Sgla is a second growth from Margaux, Bordeaux, as set out in the 1855 classification of Medoc and Graves. The wine of the same name is rich and concentrated, and is often considered one of the best of the second growths. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 62 percent of the 70-hectare (173-acre) vineyard, with Merlot at 36 percent and a small amount of both Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot making up the remainder. Soils are clay gravels on a Quaternary river terrace with areas of deeper fine gravel. The second wine, Sgla, is made in a more approachable style than the grand vin. It features a higher proportion of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Since 1994 and its acquisition by fashion giant Chanel, quality has improved at Rauzan-Sgla. Machine harvesting was eliminated, and there was a move to work the vineyards plot by plot. Grapes are sorted by hand and are aged in high-quality Sessile oak barrels. The grand vin spends 18 months in oak with 60 percent new wood. The chteau was initially founded under the name Domaine de Rauzan in 1661 by Pierre Desmezures, an important figure in Bordeaux’s history who, at the time, also owned chteaux Margaux and Latour. Eventually, the property came under the control of the Baroness of Sgla, Catherin de Rauzan, who named it Rauzan-Sgla for herself. In 1994, the estate was bought by fashion giant Chanel, which also owns Chteau Canon in Bordeaux and St Supry in Napa.
