Vintage: 2000

Size: 750ml

ABV: 13%

Varietal: Bordeaux Blend Red

    Country/Region: France, Bordeaux

This is a muscular red, rippling with bramble-edged tannins that push the dense core of blackberry, fig and boysenberry fruit paste flavors along. Juicy star anise notes and a swath of well-roasted apple wood add even more range on the finish, which is seriously long

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: An impressive performance by Lagrange, the 2000 possesses a saturated ruby/purple color with obvious notes of melted licorice, creme de cassis, and toasty new oak. This ripe, dense, full-bodied St.-Julien is chewy, thick, high in tannin, large-bodied, and impressively long and dense. As always, it is less expressive than some of its peers, but it is loaded as well as reasonably priced.
      • James Suckling: Its medium-to-full-bodied, with super-integrated tannins and a lead-pencil, currant and berry character. Lemon peel undertones. Lovely silky texture.

      Producer Information

Chteau Lagrange is a well-regarded wine estate based in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Haut-Mdoc region, north of Bordeaux city on the so-called “left bank” of the Gironde estuary. The estate was classified as a third growth in the 1855 Classification of the Mdoc and Graves. Its eponymous grand vin regularly receives high ratings and critical praise. Historically, there is evidence that grapes were planted here in the Middle Ages but it was not until the 17th Century, with the amalgamation of two properties (the “tenement of Pellecahus” and Lagrange) that the genesis of the current property was formed under the noble title of Lagrange de Monteil. The estate was passed between many well-known wine merchants and families throughout the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries until the current owners, Japanese drinks giant Suntory, purchased the estate in 1983. The wider estate covers 118 hectares (291 acres) with red grape varieties broken up between Cabernet Sauvignon (67 percent), Merlot (28 percent) and five percent Petit Verdot. The estate also boasts 11 hectares (27 acres) of white varieties made up of 80 percent Sauvignon Blanc, ten percent Sauvignon Gris and ten percent Smillon. The composition of the wines reflect the ratios of planting with some of th oldest vines dating back to the 1950s. The eponymous grand vin is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend, aged for nearly two years in 60 percent new oak. The second wine, Les Fiefs de Lagrange, was established in 1985 and comes from vines that are on average 30 years old, matured in French oak barrels for a year and then bottled. The chteau produces an additional label, Le Haut-Mdoc de Lagrange, from 18 hectares (45 acres) of gravelly soils on a neighboring commune not in the Saint-Julien appellation, purchased in 2012. This wine is a more even blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and is smooth and fruit-forward, ready to be drunk earlier than its stablemates. Since 1996, there has also been a dry white wine added to the Lagrange portfolio. Known as Les Arums de Lagrange, it is a barrel-fermented, Sauvignon Blanc-dominant white made in a rounded and spicy style, often with notes of citrus zest, stone fruits and vanilla.
