Producer: Harlan Estate

Ratings: WA | 99 WS | 96

Vintage: 1995

Size: 750ml

ABV: 14%

Varietal: Bordeaux Blend Red

    Country/Region: United States, California

Deep red-ruby, with some development at the rim. Flamboyant aromas of currant, tobacco, smoked meat and animal fur. Silky on entry, then wonderfully sweet but energetic, with remarkably complex flavors of dark fruits, graphite minerality, hot rocks, leather and smoked meat. Very suave in texture. Finishes with substantial but sweet tannins, a distinctly wild character and outstanding mineral persistence.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The 1995 Harlan Estate is almost as perfect as the 1994. It has gotten even better in the bottle, and remains one of the most remarkable young Cabernet Sauvignons I have tasted. The wine, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, was aged in 100% new oak, which adds subtle pain grille/toasty scents. This opaque purple-colored Cabernet offers up a nose of smoke, coffee beans, black and blue fruits, minerals, and roasted herbs. It is extremely full-bodied, with spectacular purity, exquisite equilibrium, and a seamless personality with everything in total harmony. The finish lasts for more than 40 seconds. This extravagantly rich, profoundly complex 1995 will give its 1994 sibling a run for its money.
      • Wine Spectator: Tight, sturdy and slow to evolve, with firm, concentrated dried currant, sage, plum, tobacco and black cherry flavors, gaining depth and nuance while retaining a sense of elegance and finesse.

      Producer Information

Harlan Estate is a high-profile, critically-lauded wine producer based in the Oakville AVA of Napa Valley, California. The vineyard is superbly located in the hills above Martha’s Vineyard (Heitz Cellar) and To Kalon (Robert Mondavi), just north of Napa town itself. Its Cabernet Sauvignon-based flagship wine is one of California’s most sought-after wines, regularly commanding prices exceeding $1000 per bottle. The estate was founded in 1984 by property developer William (known as “Bill”) Harlan. He had previously developed the Meadowood resort before buying 240 acres (97 hectares) of steep, densely wooded land above the western Oakville benchlands. Some 40 acres (16 hectares) of this was cleared for vineyards. These are mostly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, but with smaller amounts of other red Bodeaux varieties. Harlan Estate’s first commercial vintage was the 1990, which was released in 1996 with a then-expensive price tag of $65 a bottle. Since then, the estate has cemented itself as one of the most highly-regarded wine producers in the world, with eight vintages achieving 100-point scores from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. As a result, prices have risen exponentially, and today the average global price (ex-tax) per 750ml bottle approaches $1,500 USD. In addition to the flagship red, Harlan Estate also makes a second wine, The Maiden.
