The 2000 Pinot Noir Occidental Vineyard Cuvee Elizabeth is profound. An opaque purple color is followed by gorgeous aromas of white flowers, minerals, black raspberries, cherries, and toast. It is slightly tight (from high tannin), and boasts layers of flavor, astonishing purity as well as fruit intensity, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute.
Occidental Winery is a brand of Pinot Noir wines, produced by Steve Kistler in the Sonoma Coast subregion of California. It was founded in 2011 by Steve Kistler, the founder and previous winemaker of the cult-status Kistler Vineyards for 37 years. The current portfolio is composed of five single-vineyard bottlings. In the winery, each plot is kept seperate throughout the fermentation process with higher portions of whole clusters kept when the incidence of millerandage is high. The temperature of the cellar initiates fermentation with wild yeasts from the vineyard and winery. The wines are bottled unfiltered and unfined with minimal additions of sulfur dioxide. The Occidental vineyards are found within proximity of Bodega where headlands and ridges channel wind and fog from the coastline into the vineyards. This maritime influence keeps airflow moving through the canopy to create unfavourable conditions for mildew diseases. It also keep temperatures moderate throughout the growing season and limits fruit set. This creates low yields of premium grapes with concentrated flavor compounds.
