Producer Information

Mateus is a Portuguese wine brand particularly associated with lightly sparkling, slightly sweet ros. It is owned by Sogrape, the largest wine producer in the country. The history of Mateus Ros goes back to 1942, when Fernando Van Zeller Guedes founded Sogrape and created a light, fresh sparkling wine in a bottle inspired by soldiers’ flasks from World War I and chosen to stand out from more typical designs. Production grew through the ’50s and ’60s and, by the 1980s, worldwide sales for the ros (including a white version) hit 3.25 million cases per year and accounted for around 40 percent of all Portuguese table wine exports. Despite a decline in popularity since the 1980s and 90s, the brand still remains well-known and is established in a number of markets worldwide. The portfolio has expanded and now also includes fully sparkling ross and white wines. The range also includes the Expressions label spanning three still ross and a white wine. There is also deeper-colored Tempranillo Ros sourced from Spain.
