Polished wood, cedar and black cherry jam – sweet on the palate, a very fine and elegant vintage. It’s long and silky with a lovely acidity keeping things fresh, alongside a little menthol note that accentuates the freshness, as does the salinity on the finish.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau is gorgeous, structured, impressive. Full-bodied and backward, with great depth, purity, and heady aromatics, this 20,000-case blend of 60% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, and 15% miscellaneous amounts of the other permitted varietals will easily rival the 1998. A deep ruby/purple-tinged color is accompanied by a sweet perfume of salty sea breezes, seaweed, melted licorice, kirsch liqueur, creme de cassis, and iodine … a classic Vieux-Telegraphe aromatic display. Powerful as well as firmly structured, this is a wine to lay away for 4-5 years. It should prove to be uncommonly long-lived, lasting a minimum of two decades. It gets my nod as the greatest Vieux-Telegraphe since the 1998.
      • James Suckling: An expression of autumnal, leafy and dried red berry fruits on the nose with some red licorice. too. Still very fresh. Terrific depth. Blue fruits and layered plum flavors. Elegant and powerful. Still super youthful. Extremely fine tannins that run long. Plush and refreshing. Saline kick to the finish.

      Producer Information

Domaine du Vieux Tlgraphe is a producer in the southern Rhne region of Chteauneuf-du-Pape. Owned by the Brunier family for more than 100 years, Vieux Tlgraphe is one of the best-known producers in the region. The Brunier family also produces Gigondas-designated wine under the Les Pallieres label, IGP from Vaucluse, AOC Ventoux and wine under the label Massaya from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. Another Chteauneuf-du-Pape red was released by the family under the label La Roquette until 2011, when it was replaced with Piedlong. The domaine was established by Hippolyte Brunier and produced its first wine in 1900. It has grown to become one of the largest land owners in Chteauneuf-du-Pape with almost 100 hectares (240 acres). The majority of its vineyards are dedicated to red varieties, with Grenache being the most important grape in the region, though small sections of white wine are used in the production of Chteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc. The best fruit comes from the La Crau plateau, which sits elevated above many of the region’s other vineyards, and is known for its galets, or pudding stones, that account for 70 percent of the soil composition and can reach depths of up to five meters (16ft). The eponymous Vieux Tlgraphe is the flagship wine and is made with grapes from the La Crau vineyard, which has the oldest vines. The estate also makes a Tlgraphe Blanc, as well as the second wine, Tlgramme, made in both red (rouge) and white (blanc) styles. The Tlgramme Rouge has a higher percentage of Grenache in its blend and fruit comes from the domaine’s younger vines, but these are still decades old. The production of the Tlgramme is more than 16,000 cases annually, giving it some of the largest production figures for a Chteauneuf-designated wine. The Tlgramme Blanc is made in very small numbers and produced mostly for export to the United States. The other varieties within the Vignobles Brunier holdings include Mourvdre, Cinsaut and Syrah for the red wines, and Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussane for the white wines.
