The nose reflects notes of cassis, dark currant, earth, the sauvage and discreet though again not invisible wood. There is even better richness and much more minerality to the broad-shouldered and robust flavors that terminate in a rustic, muscular and youthfully austere finish. Like the old vines Gevrey, this is decidedly old school in style and not surprisingly, is going to need plenty of cellar time.
Srafin Pre et Fils, also known as Domaine Christian Srafin, is a Burgundian estate based in Gevrey-Chambertin, producing wines from Pinot Noir across Gevrey and neighboring appellations in the Cte de Nuits. It has been held in high regard both at home and in export markets since a run of excellent vintages in the 1990s. The estate was formed in 1947 by Polish immigrant Stanislaus Srafin, who had previously worked as a mason. His son Christian inherited the business in 1988, having been winemaker for the previous two decades. Now himself retired, his winemaker niece and his daughter run the estate. There are just 5.18 hectares (12.8 acres) of vineyards. About half of these are village-level Gevrey-Chambertin. There are also parcels in three premier cru vineyards in the village, plus a precious 0.31 hectare (0.77 acre) plot in Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru. The portfolio is completed by premier cru wines from Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, small amounts of Bourgogne Pinot Noir and a few rows of Bourgogne Chardonnay.
