Chteau Cissac is a wine estate in the heart of the Haut-Mdoc adjoining the Saint-Estphe and Pauillac appellations. It makes a range of wines based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon. Though the category is now reviewed with each vintage, at the time of writing the grand vin was classified as a Cru Bourgeois Suprieur. The vineyards at Chteau Cissac cover approximately 100 hectares (247 acres) in a single tract of land. This is nestled between nearby Cissac village and the surrounding woodlands. 70 percent is planted with the traditional Mdoc grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon. This variety is perfectly suited to the terroir here, with a largely sandy gravel soil overlaying clay and limestone. While Cabernet Sauvignon forms the base of the wines, Merlot and Petit Verdot (around 22 and 8 percent of the vineyard) are used to bring roundness and depth to the blends. A mix of manual and mechanical harvesting is employed. The chteau was constructed over the remains of a Roman villa and dates back to 1769. The estate in its modern form can be traced back to the merger in 1899 of Chteau Martiny (bought by the Vialard family four years earlier) and the newly acquired Chateau Abiet. Members of the Vialard family remain as owners today.
