        Producer Information

The wine estate is recorded in the 19th century, though the farmhouse on the property dates back to the 18th. In its early years, it formed part of a larger estate with what is now Chteau Gombaude Guillot. At 14 hectares (35 acres), Clos l’glise was one of the larger vineyards in Pomerol. Contested rights of succession eventually led to its division into two estates. The modern Clos l’glise retained 6ha (15 acres) and was run by the Rouchet family. The slight larger plot became Chteau l’glise-Clinet, run by the Maulon family. Despite the “Clos” name, the vineyards are not walled. In 1975 the owners at that time (the Moreau family of Chteau Plince) redesigned the winemaking facilities, replacing old wooden vats with stainless steel. Also, the vineyard was expanded by planting on sections of pasture. All of the Cabernet Sauvignon (about 20 percent of the vines at that time) was removed in favor of Merlot. Clos l’glise changed hands again in 1997 when Sylviane Garcin Cathiard bought the estate for 12 million Euros (roughly $17 million) a record price for Pomerol at the time. The family refurbished the property, replaced some old concrete fermenters, and installed more modern equipment. They retained the original 18th Century faade of the winery.
